Facebook Launches Interests Lists To Help You Find And Follow What You Enjoy [Updates]

Facebook has just launched a new feature called Interests Lists. Basically, these are custom lists that allow you to follow a bunch of people who are related in some way. For example, you could have a list featuring every hockey team in the NHL, and click that interest to find out everything that is happening. This keeps these posts in a separate area where you can check them at your leisure, and keeps your news feed dedicated to more real life items.

It’s an interesting move by Facebook because on the surface, it would seem to appeal more to users, because it lets them keep all of their interests grouped together, but it also appeals greatly to advertisers. Businesses can focus adverts based that the particular interest they are looking at. What better way to advertise exclusively to people looking for information about hockey than by having it in a hockey based list?
Interest Lists can also be used to follow friends. This is where it really becomes like Google Plus Circles. You can group your friends together based on whatever you like, and it allows you to only see posts from certain friends.

This feature has some potential, as you can keep things more organized on your Facebook, but the million dollar question is whether users will actually use Interests Lists to keep track of people and brands, or will they just “Like” them as they always have?

No matter how you see it, it’s an update from Facebook that does not intrude on your normal usage, and it has the potential to expand your horizons and increase your time spent on Facebook more than ever.
